Great Wall Motor was founded in 1984 in Baoding, Hebei, and is China’s oldest privately controlled automaker still under its original ownership. Inside China, the company retired the “Great Wall” badge from most passenger vehicles and now organizes its lineup into separate brands - Haval for mainstream SUVs, Tank for off-road 4x4s, Wey for premium models and Ora for city EVs.

In export markets, the company markets itself directly as GWM, using that name and roundel on pickups and SUVs sold in regions such as the Middle East, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Australia and Russia. The GWM-badged range is built around the Poer pickup, known as the Cannon in several export markets, alongside SUVs sold before a market has its own dedicated Haval or Tank dealer network.

GWM has expanded into overseas manufacturing to support these markets, including assembly operations in Thailand, Brazil and Pakistan, and continues to develop plug-in hybrid and range-extender powertrains across its brand portfolio.
