Uzbekistan is the largest car producer in Central Asia, and almost all of it comes from one company. UzAuto Motors, state-owned and based at Asaka, inherited the plant Daewoo built in the 1990s and assembles Chevrolet-badged models under licence from General Motors, which is why a Cobalt or a Tracker on a Tashkent street was made a few hours away. Newer lines have been added around it: a BYD joint venture at Jizzakh, and Kia assembly through a separate local partner. Domestic output covers most of the market, and exports go mainly to neighbouring countries.
