Apple is expanding CarPlay in iOS 27, shifting it from a system built mainly around navigation and music toward a broader in-car media platform. The update is available in beta now and rolls out to everyone this autumn.
What is new
The largest addition is video. CarPlay will support video apps through AirPlay while the car is parked, a first for the platform. Siri also gets a redesigned interface inside CarPlay, with support for contextual, back-and-forth conversation rather than one-off commands.
For audio, Apple is adding a mini-player for quick control of music and podcasts, plus audio scrubbing directly from the Now Playing screen. Apple says wireless CarPlay stability has been improved, along with more accurate navigation and heading detection.
Look and feel
Visually, CarPlay picks up new wallpapers and updated icons in the Liquid Glass style introduced across iOS 27, keeping the in-car interface in step with the phone.
Availability
The features are live in the iOS 27 beta and reach the general release in the autumn of 2026. As with previous CarPlay updates, availability of individual features can depend on the car and head unit.
