After years of development it launched its first two vehicles in 2021: the R1T pickup and the R1S SUV, both built on a skateboard platform with quad- and dual-motor drivetrains aimed at the adventure market.

The company builds its vehicles at a plant in Normal, Illinois, and has developed electric delivery vans first supplied to early investor Amazon. The mid-size R2, launched in 2026, is Rivian’s first mass-market model and runs on the new Mid-Size Platform. Rivian is publicly traded on the Nasdaq, and in 2024 it formed a software and electrical-architecture joint venture with Volkswagen Group.
