Overview

The Pajero returns as an all-new, body-on-frame SUV, revealed 2 September 2026 and ending a five-year gap since the outgoing generation left production in 2021. Mitsubishi has kept the formula that built the nameplate’s reputation - a ladder frame, a diesel engine and serious four-wheel-drive hardware - rather than replacing it with a crossover, and it lands in the same body-on-frame segment as Toyota’s revived Land Cruiser FJ.

Powertrain. A 2.4-litre turbodiesel with a wide-range variable-geometry turbocharger produces 150 kW (201 hp) and 480 Nm, driving all four wheels through a newly developed eight-speed automatic. Four-wheel drive is Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II, switchable between rear-drive, full-time all-wheel drive, a locked centre differential and a low-range mode, alongside the brand’s S-AWC system with seven drive modes for different surfaces.

Dimensions and off-road geometry. At 4,920 mm long on a 2,870 mm wheelbase, the new Pajero has 230 mm of ground clearance and approach, departure and ramp breakover angles of 30.4, 25.8 and 22.6 degrees respectively - figures aimed squarely at body-on-frame SUV rivals rather than road-biased crossovers.

Interior. Seven seats are standard, with a 3D Multi Around Monitor that includes an underfloor view for placing wheels on rough terrain. Twin 14.3-inch displays sit ahead of the driver and centre stack, alongside a Multi Meter showing altitude, roll and pitch angle, and torque distribution across the drivetrain. A 12-speaker Yamaha Ultimate audio system with dual amplifiers is fitted.

Production and rollout. The new Pajero is built in Thailand, where it goes on sale first, followed by Japan and Australia within Mitsubishi’s current fiscal year. The company plans to expand sales to roughly 100 countries from fiscal 2027, including markets across ASEAN, Latin America and the Middle East. In some of those export markets the car will carry the Montero name it has historically used outside Japan and Europe. No prices have been announced, and Mitsubishi has not confirmed whether the Pajero will reach the United States.
