JapanMitsubishi has revealed an all-new Pajero, a body-on-frame SUV that ends a five-year gap since the outgoing generation left production in 2021. The new car is a ladder-frame diesel built around the same off-road brief that made the nameplate’s reputation, not a reinvention of it.
What’s new
Power comes from a 2.4-litre turbodiesel with a wide-range variable-geometry turbocharger, producing 150 kW (201 hp) and 480 Nm, sent through a newly developed eight-speed automatic. Four-wheel drive is Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD-II, switchable between rear-drive, full-time all-wheel drive, a locked centre differential and a low-range mode, plus Mitsubishi’s S-AWC system with seven drive modes for different surfaces.
The new Pajero is 4,920 mm long on a 2,870 mm wheelbase, with 230 mm of ground clearance and approach, departure and ramp breakover angles of 30.4, 25.8 and 22.6 degrees. Inside, seven seats sit behind twin 14.3-inch displays and a Multi Meter that shows altitude, roll and pitch angle, and torque distribution across the drivetrain - part of the same digital-dashboard shift the segment has moved toward.
Rollout, not a US return
Production is in Thailand, where the Pajero launches first, followed by Japan and Australia within Mitsubishi’s current fiscal year. The company then plans to expand to roughly 100 countries from fiscal 2027, including markets across ASEAN, Latin America and the Middle East - some of them under the Montero name the car has historically worn outside Japan and Europe.
A US launch is a separate question. Mitsubishi’s own update to its North American product plan said only that no decision had been made on bringing the Pajero to the United States, and this reveal does not change that. No prices have been announced for any market.
