General Motors is investing $275 million in its Spring Hill, Tennessee manufacturing complex, with $150 million of that going toward preparing production of a new gasoline-powered Cadillac. It is the latest sign that the brand has stepped back from its earlier plan to go all-electric.
The remaining $125 million will modernize production of the 2.7-liter turbo engine used in Chevrolet and GMC pickups. Once the new Cadillac launches, Spring Hill will build five different Cadillac and Chevrolet models at the same plant.
GM has not officially named the new model. Industry press has speculated it could be a next-generation XT5 or an entirely new crossover, but GM has not confirmed either possibility.
