Cadillac has confirmed it will bring back gasoline-powered versions of the XT5 and XT6, reversing a decision to phase out both crossovers as the brand pushed toward an electric-only lineup. Cadillac global vice president Christian Aquilina announced the reversal.
The revived XT5 and XT6 will sell alongside Cadillac’s existing EVs: Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq and Escalade IQ. Aquilina attributed the reversal to sustained demand for gas-powered SUVs, saying buyers should have a choice between combustion and electric power rather than one dictated by the brand.
A next-generation CT5 sedan with a combustion engine is also in development. Cadillac says its EV strategy is intact, just on a longer timeline: full electrification is being pushed back, not dropped. Pricing and on-sale timing for the revived XT5 and XT6 have not been disclosed.
The move follows GM’s June announcement of a $150 million investment in its Spring Hill, Tennessee plant to build a new gas-powered Cadillac, which industry press speculated at the time could be a next-generation XT5. That speculation is now close to confirmed.
