Yajima is one of Subaru’s main manufacturing sites in Ota, Gunma Prefecture, where the company has assembled cars since the mid-1960s, including the original Subaru 1000 and the long-running Leone. It builds the current Legacy, Outback, Impreza, Crosstrek and Forester lineup.
In February 2026, Subaru began building battery-electric vehicles at Yajima for the first time, starting with the Trailseeker. The plant underwent a retooling to run a mixed production line capable of assembling combustion, hybrid and electric models together, rather than dedicating a separate line to EVs. That makes the Trailseeker Subaru’s first EV built at its own factory; the earlier Solterra and the related Uncharted are instead assembled at Toyota’s Motomachi and Takaoka plants under the companies’ joint development program.
