Overview

The EX30 is Volvo’s smallest and cheapest car, an electric SUV 4,233 mm long on a 2,650 mm wheelbase. It sits on SEA, the electric platform Geely developed for the group, which is why it drives its rear wheels rather than its front ones, unlike the XC40 it slots beneath. Volvo launched it in 2023 as an import from China and added European assembly in Ghent in 2025. It has been on sale in Norway throughout, and was the country’s fourth best-selling model in August 2026.

The German range now runs to four powertrains. The entry P3 Electric pairs a 110 kW rear motor, 150 PS or 148 hp, with the 51 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery for 339 km WLTP and 8.6 seconds to 100 km/h. P5 Electric uses the same pack and a 200 kW motor, 272 PS or 268 hp, for 337 to 344 km depending on wheels and 5.7 seconds. P5 Electric Long Range keeps that motor and swaps in the 69 kWh nickel manganese cobalt pack, 65 kWh of it usable, for up to 475 km and 5.3 seconds. P8 AWD Electric adds a front motor to the large battery for 315 kW, 428 PS or 422 hp, 3.6 seconds and about 450 km. All four are limited to 180 km/h. DC charging peaks at 134 kW on the small battery and around 153 kW on the large one.

The cabin is built around a single 12.3-inch portrait touchscreen, with no instrument display in front of the driver: speed, range and navigation all appear at the top of the centre screen. There are no door speakers, because the sound system uses a soundbar across the base of the windscreen, which is what freed up space for the storage bins in the doors. Interior trims are made partly from recycled denim fibre, PET bottles and window frames, and the dashboard decor is a flax-based composite. Boot space is 318 litres behind the rear seats with a 7-litre compartment under the bonnet.

Externally the EX30 keeps Volvo’s Thor’s hammer headlight signature in a two-piece form and splits the rear lights into an upper and a lower element on the tailgate. Volvo also sells a Cross Country version with raised suspension and body cladding. German list prices run from €34,990 for the P3 to €53,990 for the P8, and Volvo runs leasing and purchase campaigns below those figures. The larger electric SUVs above it are the EX60 and the EX90; full brand background is on the Volvo page.

WLTP is the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure, the homologation standard for Europe and much of Asia. It reads roughly 25% lower than CLTC.

What is the difference between the Volvo EX30 P3, P5 and P8?
They are the three power levels of the same car. P3 Electric has a 110 kW rear motor rated at 150 PS or 148 hp and the 51 kWh battery. P5 Electric raises the rear motor to 200 kW, 272 PS or 268 hp, and is sold with either the 51 kWh pack or, as P5 Long Range, the 69 kWh one. P8 AWD Electric adds a front motor for a combined 315 kW, 428 PS or 422 hp, and comes only with the 69 kWh battery. Volvo introduced the P3, P5 and P8 names in 2026, replacing Single Motor, Single Motor Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance.
How far does the Volvo EX30 go on a charge?
Up to 475 km WLTP for the 69 kWh single-motor version, about 450 km for the all-wheel-drive P8 and 337 to 344 km for the 51 kWh cars depending on wheel size. The 148 hp entry version is rated at 339 km on the same 51 kWh pack. DC charging peaks at 134 kW on the 51 kWh battery and around 153 kW on the 69 kWh one, which Volvo rates at roughly 26 minutes from 10 to 80%.
Where is the Volvo EX30 built?
In Ghent, Belgium, since 2025, and in Zhangjiakou, China, where production started in 2023. European cars now come from Ghent, which gave Volvo a local source for a model that had previously been imported from China only. A third line in Shah Alam, Malaysia, assembles the car for that market.
What battery does the Volvo EX30 use?
Two chemistries. The 51 kWh pack is lithium iron phosphate, which is cheaper and tolerates being charged to 100% routinely; the 69 kWh pack is nickel manganese cobalt, with 65 kWh of it usable and a higher charging peak. Both sit under the floor of the same body.
Is the Volvo EX30 Cross Country a different car?
It is the same EX30 with a raised ride height, wider track, black wheel arch and body cladding, and its own wheels and paint choices. It is sold only with the twin-motor powertrain and the 69 kWh battery, and its WLTP range is lower at about 436 km. This page covers the standard EX30.
