About
Volvo was founded in 1927 in Gothenburg, Sweden, and built its reputation on safety engineering, introducing innovations such as the three-point seatbelt in 1959 and sharing the patent freely across the industry. The company passed through Ford ownership from 1999 to 2010 before Chinese conglomerate Geely Holding acquired it, funding a broader model range and a shift toward electrification.
The current lineup spans SUVs (XC40, XC60, XC90), sedans and estates (S90, V60, V90), and a growing family of electric vehicles built on dedicated EV platforms, including the EX30, EX40, EX60 and flagship EX90. Volvo also holds a controlling stake in Polestar, the standalone electric performance brand it co-owns with Geely.
Production is split between Sweden, Belgium, China and a US plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, giving Volvo manufacturing access across its three largest markets.
