Honda is now telling owners of its only electric vehicle, the Prologue, to think about a hybrid for their next car. The suggestion appeared in July billing statements sent to US customers under the heading “Consider What’s Next,” which went on to recommend they “consider a hybrid.”
The message follows Honda’s decision to end the Prologue after the 2026 model year. Reaction from owners has been largely critical. Business Insider reported that several called the recommendation ironic or absurd, pointing out that drivers who switch to an EV rarely want to go back to a gas engine. One owner told the outlet that “practically no one who has switched to an EV wants to go back voluntarily.”
The Prologue’s exit is part of a broader shift in Honda’s US lineup. The automaker has also canceled three electric models it had planned for North America, redirecting that development work toward hybrids. Honda says it intends to bring 15 new hybrid models to market worldwide by 2030, while maintaining that it is not abandoning EVs over the longer term.
The Prologue, built on General Motors’ Ultium platform at a GM plant in Mexico alongside related Chevrolet and Cadillac electric models, was Honda’s first mass-market electric SUV for the US.
