Porsche's Sportwagenschmiede '35: fewer variants, higher prices at the top

At a capital markets day on 7 October Porsche set out its Sportwagenschmiede '35 strategy: about 20% fewer model variants, a break-even point below 200,000 cars a year, a mid-engined super sports car platform above the 911, a possible SUV above the Cayenne and electric 718 Boxster and Cayman models supporting sales in 2028.

Porsche presented a new corporate strategy, “Sportwagenschmiede ‘35”, at a capital markets day at its Weissach development centre on 7 October. Its guiding principle is “Value over Volume”: fewer, more expensive cars, and a lower sales volume at which the company turns a profit.

What Porsche targets

Porsche plans to bring its break-even point down to below 200,000 vehicles a year, and says the plan rests on a very conservative China forecast. It also wants about 20% fewer model variants, which it expects to lift the sales volume per variant by around 30% in the medium term. For the models at the top of the range it aims to raise the average selling price by around 20% in the medium term, through more personalisation and a broader offer in higher segments. That 20% applies to the top-of-range models, not to the whole lineup.

On profitability, Porsche confirmed a medium-term operating return on sales of 10 to 15% for the group and set a net cash flow margin for its car business of 9 to 12%.

Products: a mid-engined car above the 911

Porsche announced a mid-engined super sports car platform that would allow a model line above the 911, and said it would give a preview of it on 15 October. It is also examining an SUV in the D segment above the Cayenne - that one is under review, not confirmed.

The electric 718 Boxster and Cayman are expected to support sales in their first full production year, 2028. A new SUV in the B segment, powered by combustion and plug-in hybrid engines, is due to be shown in 2028 and sold alongside the electric Macan, with a noticeable contribution to revenue and profit expected in 2029. Porsche gives no battery, power, range or price figures for the 718.

Jobs

The press release says a “Zukunftspaket” agreed with employee representatives includes a socially responsible reduction of around 9,000 positions, alongside a site guarantee for the core workforce until 2035. That matches the figure Reuters reported in July, when we covered Porsche’s restructuring plans; it is now confirmed in Porsche’s own strategy. Porsche also plans to cut management positions by 40% in the medium term and the direct and indirect workforce by 25%, with a strategic target of 30%.
