Brazil is the largest car market in South America and the only major one designed around flex-fuel. Almost every new car sold there accepts petrol, sugarcane ethanol or any blend of the two, which has kept combustion engines commercially useful longer than in Europe and made full electrification a slower argument. Stellantis is the biggest producer, mostly through Fiat at Betim, with Volkswagen, General Motors, Toyota and Hyundai behind it. Chinese manufacturers entered by buying the plants others left: BYD took over Ford’s site at Camaçari, and Great Wall took Mercedes-Benz’s at Iracemápolis.
