Liftback Cars

Cars with a sedan's proportions and a tailgate that lifts the rear window along with it.

One hinge, higher up. A liftback looks like a sedan from any angle and opens like a hatchback: the tailgate carries the rear glass with it, so the aperture runs to the roof instead of stopping at a parcel shelf. Anyone who has tried to post a large box through a sedan’s boot slot knows what that is worth.

Skoda has sold the Octavia as a liftback for decades and is unusual in saying so. Most makers reach for a different word for the same body, which is why the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door and the Ferrari Luce sit under this tag despite neither using it. One further distinction is worth holding onto, because it is where most of the confusion starts: liftback and fastback are not competing labels. One names how the car opens, the other the line of its roof, and plenty of cars are both.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a liftback and a sedan?
Where the tailgate is hinged. A sedan's boot lid stops below a rear window fixed to the body; a liftback's takes the glass with it, so the opening reaches the roof. From the outside the two can look identical, and the reliable check is the shut line running up either side of the rear screen.
Is a liftback the same as a hatchback?
They open the same way and differ in proportion. A hatchback ends its roof over the rear axle and has a short tail. A liftback keeps a sedan's long rear overhang and low roofline, so it reads as a sedan until someone opens it.
Which cars are liftbacks?
More than the label suggests, because manufacturers rarely print the word. Skoda's Octavia is one of the few sold openly as a liftback; elsewhere the same body arrives as a Sportback, a Gran Coupe, a GT or simply as a sedan, and only the tailgate gives it away.
