GermanyVolkswagen has revealed the ID.3 GTI, the first GTI with an electric motor and the first to send its power to the rear wheels. Volkswagen describes the car it showed as a near-production concept. Pre-sales start at the beginning of 2027, and no price has been announced.
240 kW from one rear motor
A single motor in the rear axle makes 240 kW (326 PS, or 322 hp) and 545 Nm. Volkswagen quotes 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 200 km/h.
Volkswagen calls it the most powerful model in five decades of GTI history. The margin is 1 PS: the petrol Golf GTI Edition 50 makes 325 PS.
The motor, battery and range figures are the same as the ID.3 GTX Performance’s (240 kW, 545 Nm, 79 kWh, 601 km WLTP). What the GTI badge changes is the chassis tuning, the driving modes and the trim.
Battery and charging
The battery holds 79 kWh net, for up to 601 km on the WLTP cycle. It charges at up to 183 kW DC, and a 10-80% charge takes about 29 minutes.
What the GTI adds
Adaptive DCC sports suspension, progressive steering and Launch Control are standard. The drive modes are Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual, plus a new GTI mode. Outside, the car sits on 20-inch Wörthersee wheels and gets a red stripe across the front and IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights. Five colours are listed, Tornado Red among them.
Inside are sports seats in GTI tartan, a steering wheel with a red 12 o’clock marker, a new digital instrument display and a 12.9-inch touchscreen.
