About

Avatr Technology is a premium electric-car brand headquartered in Chongqing, built jointly by Changan Automobile, battery maker CATL and Huawei. It did not start as a three-way project: Changan and Nio founded the company as Changan Nio in July 2018, each holding half. Nio later exited, and in 2021 Changan brought in CATL and Huawei, renaming the company Avatr Technology and launching the brand publicly that November.

Changan remains the controlling shareholder at 40.99%, with CATL holding 14.1%. Huawei’s role is different from a typical equity partner - it supplies the intelligent-driving algorithms and smart-cockpit software that define Avatr’s cars, and in 2024 the relationship went the other way too, when Avatr bought a 10% stake in Huawei’s own smart-car spin-off, Yinwang Intelligent Technology, for RMB 11.5 billion.

The lineup is coupe-styled electric SUVs and sedans: the Avatr 11 launched the brand in 2022, followed by the 12 sedan and the 07L, a five-seat SUV built around a CATL Shenxing battery and Huawei’s ADS 5 driving system. Avatr sits inside Changan’s wider new-energy strategy alongside the mainstream Deepal brand, occupying the premium end that Deepal does not reach.
