Overview

The Torres is the car that pulled KG Mobility out of its second receivership. Launched in June 2022 under the SsangYong name, it sold well enough to help the company reach the KG Group takeover of 2022 and the KG Mobility rename that followed in March 2023, and it remains the closest thing the lineup has to a volume model. It is built alongside the rest of KGM’s SUVs at the Pyeongtaek plant, the company’s only factory.

The petrol Torres runs a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder making 168 hp, paired with an 8-speed automatic and offered with front- or all-wheel drive, across T5 and T7 trims. A hybrid version adds two electric motors and a 1.8 kWh battery to the same 1.5-litre engine for a combined 201 hp, front-wheel drive only.

The Torres EVX, launched in 2023, is a separate single-motor electric version rather than a badge-engineered variant. It uses a 73.4 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery supplied by BYD, built with the same blade cell-to-pack construction BYD uses in its own cars, rated by South Korea’s Ministry of Environment at 433 km on a full charge. Instead of the petrol Torres’s grille, the EVX wears a full-width light bar across the nose, since an electric motor needs far less cooling air. Output is 204 hp from the single front motor.

In South Korea the petrol Torres starts at 29,050,000 won (~$21,000) for the T5 and rises to 32,410,000 won (~$23,400) for the T7; the hybrid runs 32,050,000 to 36,510,000 won (~$23,100–26,400); the EVX starts at 46,020,000 won (~$33,200) for the E5 and 48,120,000 won (~$34,700) for the E7. Beyond Korea, KGM sells the Torres in the UK, continental Europe and Australia, where the badge on the tailgate depends on the market: KGM in most places, still SsangYong in Australia and Turkey.
