USAGeneral Motors will keep Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in its new trucks. The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 are the first vehicles with a new GM interface, which runs phone projection in a panel beside the truck’s own apps, such as trailering data and vehicle status, instead of handing it the whole screen. GM says the interface will spread to more of its lineup after the trucks.
A reversal of the 2023 plan
In 2023 GM said it would phase CarPlay and Android Auto out of its electric vehicles, and in late 2025 it extended that plan to all its vehicles. The new trucks reverse it. “People really like CarPlay and Android Auto because they’re so user-centric,” GM software executive Mike Wahlstrom said. “We heard from customers that they want that same simplicity while still having quick access to everything their vehicle can do.”
GM has not said whether the connection is wired or wireless, or when its electric models will get the new interface. The interface also changes the look of GM’s own software, with a black background, higher-contrast icons, 3D visualisations and an instrument display that changes with the drive mode. In the Sierra Denali Ultimate, GMC counts more than 60 inches of combined displays.
No dipstick on the V8s
GM confirmed to The Drive that the 5.7 and 6.6-litre V8s introduced with the fifth-generation Silverado have no dipstick from the factory. Owners read the oil level on a digital gauge instead. The 2.7-litre TurboMax four-cylinder and the 3.0-litre Duramax diesel keep a dipstick.
