USARivian CEO RJ Scaringe says the smaller R3 will be priced materially below the R2. He did not name a figure, and Rivian has not announced a launch date.
What Scaringe said
In an interview with The New York Times published in September, Scaringe said of the R3: “We haven’t announced pricing yet, but it will move materially lower.” The R2 starts at $44,990 before a $1,495 destination charge. He added that a later R4 “again moves that further”, so Rivian is planning a second model below the R3.
The $44,990 price belongs to the R2 Standard, the last version to arrive: only the Performance is delivering in 2026, and the Standard follows in 2027. No R2 customer has paid that price yet.
What Rivian has said about the R3
Rivian revealed the R3 and R3X in March 2024 on the R2’s Mid-Size Platform and has said they follow the R2, in North America first. Rivian’s quickest tri-motor setup is claimed to reach 60 mph in under 3 seconds; the model page has the rest of the 2024 announcement. No battery capacities, power figures or on-sale date have been announced.
