USAToyota will invest $3.6 billion to expand its San Antonio, Texas manufacturing plant and move production of the Tacoma pickup there from Mexico. The new line is targeted to start by 2030.
The expansion adds a 2.5 million square foot building to the San Antonio site and is expected to grow the plant’s workforce by about 2,000 people. The plant currently builds the Tundra full-size pickup and Sequoia SUV.
The Tacoma has been the best-selling midsize pickup in the US for more than two decades, but the current generation is built entirely in Mexico, at Toyota plants in Baja California and Guanajuato.
The move follows US tariff pressure on automakers and renegotiated trade terms with Mexico and Canada. Shifting Tacoma production to Texas reduces Toyota’s exposure to cross-border tariffs and puts assembly closer to the truck’s largest market.
