Volkswagen Group and India’s JSW have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding on a joint venture, aimed at widening the model range, deepening local sourcing of vehicles and components, and raising both production and in-country R&D.
An ownership split neither side has confirmed
Nikkei and the Economic Times report a 51:49 structure favouring JSW, but the shares remain officially undisclosed. Volkswagen has confirmed joint control and a division of roles, and nothing more - a final agreement is only targeted before the end of 2026, not signed.
The venture would develop, build and sell cars for India and for export, spanning petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains on shared platforms.
Twenty years, two percent
Volkswagen has operated in India for more than twenty years and holds about 2% of the market there. Skoda currently runs the group’s local operations. JSW is not new to cars either: it already runs a joint venture with SAIC building MG, and separately plans to invest up to $3 billion in its own electric-vehicle arm.
