Motomachi was Toyota’s first plant built specifically for passenger cars, opening in August 1959 in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, as the company moved beyond truck manufacturing. It has since become one of Toyota’s flagship sites, with a workforce of around 4,000 and annual capacity of roughly 73,000 vehicles.
The plant’s current lineup spans Toyota’s most specialized models: the flagship Century and Crown sedans, the Lexus LC coupe, the Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell sedan, and the GR Corolla and GR Yaris performance hatchbacks. Since 2022 it has also built the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra together on a dedicated electric-vehicle line, the product of a joint development program between the two companies. The Solterra shares its platform, motors and battery with the bZ4X, but is assembled here rather than at a Subaru-operated plant.
