Coupe Cars

Two-door cars with a cabin cut short behind the front seats, from strict two-seaters to 2+2 layouts.

The word is French for cut, and it began as a carriage body shortened behind the driver. That is still the useful test. A coupe gives up rear doors, rear-seat space, or both, and spends what it saves on proportion. Roof shape is a separate question and always has been: a coupe can also be a fastback, and most are, but the two words answer different things.

Marketing has since stretched the term across four-door cars and SUVs, which is why the original sense is worth holding somewhere. The cars under this tag still meet it. The Honda Prelude is 4,522 mm long and 1,355 mm tall. The Nissan Z keeps a front engine and rear drive in a two-seat body. The Denza Z, 4,780 mm long and 1,350 mm tall, is the same layout rebuilt around a battery. No mechanical recipe connects them. The common decision is where the interior volume goes, and it goes to the two people in front.

Frequently asked questions
How many doors does a coupe have?
Two, and that part of the definition has held for a century. Rear seats are optional: some coupes have none, some have a pair reached by folding a front seat forward. A tailgate is not counted, which is why a two-door coupe and a three-door hatchback can have the same openings.
What is a 2+2 coupe?
A coupe with two proper front seats and two small ones behind them. The rear pair is sized for short trips or for luggage, with the roofline and the wheelbase both working against headroom and legroom. Manufacturers use the notation to signal that the back seats exist without promising an adult will fit in them.
What is a four-door coupe?
A sedan or liftback with a low roof that starts falling early, sold under a coupe name. It describes styling rather than a body type, since the car keeps four doors and a full rear bench. The same treatment now reaches tall SUVs, where the sloping roof costs rear headroom and boot height.
