Van Cars

Commercial-derived bodies built around load volume, sold as panel vans and as the passenger versions based on them.

A van is drawn backwards from the box. Load floor as low as the driveline allows, walls vertical rather than tapered, a rear opening squared off to the corners, and a roof high enough that the operator does not have to kneel. Every other decision, including where the driver sits and how the suspension is rated, comes after that. Read a van’s spec sheet and the numbers that carry weight are cubic metres, payload in kilograms and the width between the wheel arches, which is what determines whether a standard pallet goes in.

The class runs from car-sized to nearly seven metres, and most models are sold in several lengths and roof heights off one platform. The Volkswagen Caddy is the small end, sharing its underpinnings with the group’s passenger cars, and the Ford Explorer Van is the electric version of the same idea. Depot-charged urban delivery work suits a battery better than almost any private use case does, since the routes are fixed, the daily distance is known in advance and the vehicle sits still overnight where the charger is. Passenger versions of these bodies are also common, particularly as shuttles and taxis, and they are a different vehicle from the car-based minivan despite the resemblance.

Frequently asked questions
What is a panel van?
A van with solid metal in place of the side and rear glass behind the front doors, and usually a bulkhead separating the load area from the cab. Nothing in the back is visible from outside, which is the point for tools and stock. The same vehicle with windows and seats added is sold as a kombi or a crew van.
What is the difference between a van and a minivan?
What the vehicle was designed to carry. A van is engineered around cargo: a load bay with vertical walls, a payload rating, a floor height set by the driveline and seats fitted afterwards if at all. A minivan is a passenger car with a square body, built on a car platform and specified for people from the start. The two often look similar and are rated, taxed and insured differently.
Are vans built on car platforms?
The small ones frequently are. A compact van shares its floorpan and much of its front structure with a hatchback or a compact SUV, which keeps the driving experience close to a car's. Larger vans use dedicated commercial platforms with rear or all-wheel drive, heavier suspension and a chassis-cab version sold to bodybuilders.
