The BYD Atto 8 is the export name for the Tang L, a seven-seat SUV that BYD sells domestically in China and rebadges for other markets - Atto 8 in Africa, Sealion 8 across Oceania and Southeast Asia. It measures 5,040 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, and 1,760 mm tall on a 2,950 mm wheelbase, putting it in the same size class as three-row rivals from Audi and Volvo.
Two powertrain families are offered. The Super Hybrid plug-in pairs a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with BYD’s fifth-generation DM system: a front-wheel-drive Premium variant makes 205 kW (275 hp) combined with a 19 kWh battery for 75 km of electric range, while the all-wheel-drive Performance variant adds a rear motor for 359 kW (481 hp) combined, a 35.6 kWh battery, 130 km of electric range, and a 4.9-second 0-100 km/h time. Total range on the plug-in reaches 892 km. China also offers a pure-electric version with a 100.5 kWh Blade Battery, delivering 670 km of CLTC range in single-motor rear-drive form or 600 km with the 1,086 hp dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup, the latter capable of 3.9 seconds to 100 km/h.
Both versions share BYD’s 800V-plus fast-charging hardware, with the electric variant supporting peak rates above 1,000 kW for roughly 370 km of range in five minutes. Cargo space runs from 675 liters with all seven seats in use to 1,960 liters with the second and third rows folded flat.
South African pricing for the Super Hybrid runs from R1,059,900 for the Premium to R1,259,900 for the Performance AWD, which launched there in April 2026 following the car’s China debut a year earlier.
