The Scout Traveler is a full-size SUV and one of two debut models from Scout Motors, the American off-road brand revived by Volkswagen Group. It replaces the classic International Harvester Scout II in spirit - the same square proportions, muscular wheel arches, and removable glass panels - but with an 800-volt electric platform and ladder-frame architecture underneath.
Two powertrain choices are available. The full battery-electric version uses an NMC pack with over 560 km (350 miles) of projected range, a 0 to 96 km/h (0-60 mph) time of 3.5 seconds, and 800V architecture supporting DC charging up to 350 kW. The alternative is Harvester - Scout’s extended-range system that pairs an LFP battery (around 240 km / 150 miles on electricity alone) with a Volkswagen Group four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine acting purely as a generator. Total range with the generator running exceeds 800 km (500 miles). Of more than 160,000 reservation holders, 87% chose the Harvester over the full BEV.
The Traveler runs four-wheel drive, off-road locking differentials, and dedicated terrain modes. A rugged interior keeps physical buttons and controls accessible while wearing gloves. The Traveler is scheduled for production at Scout’s new South Carolina factory from late 2028, with pricing starting under $60,000.
