Scout Motors wants to sell its Traveler and Terra models directly to customers, skipping the traditional dealer network. Buyers order straight from Scout, and service and support run through the company’s own setup afterward.
That is the root of a legal fight now playing out in several states. Volkswagen dealers argue Scout is drawing on VW Group resources while bypassing the existing franchise system they operate under. The Charlotte Observer reports lawsuits against Scout and Volkswagen have been filed in California, Florida, Colorado, New York and Connecticut.
Scout maintains the brand runs independently: it has no franchised dealers, its vehicles have never been sold through Volkswagen or Audi showrooms, and it plans to build out its own retail locations. CEO Scott Keogh told WardsAuto that direct sales are “100% of the plan.”
The most tangled case is South Carolina, where Scout is building its factory. State law there does not currently let a manufacturer sell vehicles directly to buyers, and AP reports an effort to change that law has stalled against dealer opposition. Scout could end up building cars in a state where it cannot sell them without a middleman.
The dispute is a preview of a fight the whole EV-adjacent auto industry keeps having: state franchise laws were written for a dealer-run distribution model, and direct-sales brands from Tesla onward keep running into them state by state.
