Chery unveiled a megawatt charging system called Volt-dragon at its Global Innovation Conference. The peak charging power is 1.44 MW, and Chery says a car can gain 500 km of range in 5 minutes, according to CarNewsChina. A charge from 10% to 97% takes 6 minutes and 50 seconds on the same claim. Chery has not said which cars these figures apply to, so they describe the charging system rather than any model on sale.
What the stations use
The chargers use silicon carbide power electronics with a stated grid-to-plug efficiency of 96.5%, and immersion liquid cooling to carry heat away during megawatt charging. Chery says the plug and cable weigh 2 kg together and that the stations stay under 50 dBA in operation. In more conservative conditions the system adds 500 km of range in 8 minutes. Supported vehicles are expected to use 800 V or 1,000 V-plus platforms, and Chery has not published how the system performs in extreme heat or cold.
Vehicle-to-grid and automatic charging
Volt-dragon supports vehicle-to-grid (V2G), so a plugged-in car can send electricity back to the grid. Chery also plans automatic charging with a robotic arm, shown as a mockup at the event.
Rollout
Chery says it is opening 100 Volt-dragon stations in 10 Chinese cities, with further expansion plans to follow before the end of 2026. The long-term target is more than 20,000 V2G-capable stations worldwide by 2029.
