Chery Group said on 21 October 2026 that the Omoda C4 will be the first car built at its Rosslyn plant near Pretoria, which Chery bought from Nissan this year. Production of the compact crossover, sold as the Omoda 4 in other markets, starts in the third quarter of 2027.
What Rosslyn will build
During the ramp-up in the third and fourth quarters of 2027, Chery expects to build 15,000 vehicles, rising eventually to 50,000 a year. The Omoda C4 will be offered in petrol, hybrid and fully electric versions when it goes on sale in South Africa next year, and the Jetour T series of SUVs is also planned for the plant.
Imports first, hybrid first
South African buyers are expected to get imported Omoda C4s from early 2027, ahead of local assembly, according to Chery’s local arm. The first car out of Rosslyn will be the hybrid, according to the same source.
Localisation
Chery says production will come with a programme to develop South African suppliers and raise the share of locally sourced parts, in line with national efforts to build more of the car at home. It wants South Africa to be its African hub for manufacturing, exports, research and development. The Omoda 4 page has the electric version’s figures from its Indonesian launch.
