Citroën unveiled the 2 CV Concept at the Paris Motor Show on 11 October. It is a 3.76-metre electric concept that previews a production car Citroën says will be built in Europe, will join its range by 2028 and “aims for a starting price of around €15,000”. Citroën has not given a battery size, motor output or range for either the concept or the car behind it.

Price, weight and timing targets

The price is a starting-price target, the 2028 date is when the model is meant to join the range, and the weight is described as “a controlled weight aiming for one tonne”. Citroën ties the last two together: less mass means a smaller, cheaper battery, with a range “tailored for everyday use”.

The production model itself is still to be unveiled, within the next two years according to Citroën. The company calls the concept shorter than the original 2 CV and says it is not an attempt to replicate it.

Where it fits

Citroën places the car between the Ami and the C3, and says it will comply with “future E-Car regulations”. That is the EU’s proposed class of small, simplified electric cars covered in our May report on the Stellantis E-Car programme, which named Citroën as one of three brands taking part. Citroën’s 2 CV release says only “manufactured in Europe”.

What the concept shows

Citroën says it designed for mass production and ease of repair: flat body surfaces and bumpers separated from the bodywork and replaceable independently. The concept rides on 18-inch steel wheels. The cabin has no traditional dashboard. A cylinder holds a single-spoke steering wheel, one control lever and an 8-inch square touchscreen, and a removable basket replaces the centre console.

The roof is fabric, and a detachable radio called Radioën doubles as a speaker that can leave the car. At the rear, the black tailgate runs down to the bumper, as on the first-generation 2 CV.
