DR Automobiles has presented the Itala 61, the largest model of the Itala brand it revived in 2025. The seven-seat SUV is a GAC Trumpchi GS8 from China with its own front and rear design and cabin trim. Prices and the on-sale date have not been announced.
The Itala 61 keeps the GS8’s 2.0 TGDI turbo petrol engine with 231 PS (228 hp), an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The most visible addition is a leather bag built into the tailgate, a reference to the Itala 61 the original Turin company built in the 1920s.
Three SUVs from GAC’s Trumpchi range
The 61 is the third model of the revived brand, and all three come from GAC. The Itala 35, based on the GS3 and styled with Italdesign, is priced from €35,000 (about $41,000). The Itala 56, based on the Emkoo, is due in autumn 2026, and the 61 sits above both.
Historic Italian Brands and Fabbrica Italia
Itala is part of Historic Italian Brands, a project led by DR founder Massimo Di Risio that is also reviving O.S.C.A., the marque the Maserati brothers founded in Bologna in 1947. A new company in the project, Fabbrica Italia, is building two facilities in Macchia d’Isernia, Molise, to assemble both brands’ cars, in the same town where DR already completes its own Chinese-sourced models.
The brands have their own sales network, with BiAuto Group as the commercial partner. The first showroom opened in Turin in May 2026, and the target is 50 in Italy by the end of 2026.
