SAIC-Volkswagen has announced the ID.Era 8X, the third model in its ID.Era family for China. It follows the flagship 9X crossover and the 5S sedan. The announcement comes through China’s MIIT certification filing; a full premiere is expected later in 2026.
The 8X sits one rung below the 9X. It measures 5,020 mm long on a 2,970 mm wheelbase, against 5,207 mm and 3,070 mm for the 9X, and it seats five where the 9X is strictly a six-seater.
Powertrain. Despite the ID badge, the 8X is a range-extender. A 1.5-litre turbocharged engine produces 143 hp but runs only as a generator, never driving the wheels. Two electric motors deliver a combined 503 hp through all-wheel drive. Buyers choose between a 51.1 kWh battery for around 340 km of electric-only range, or a 65.2 kWh pack for around 400 km, both on the WLTC cycle. These are manufacturer figures from the announcement and could change before the car goes on sale.
Design. The 8X looks like a scaled-down 9X, with different bumpers and headlights and semi-hidden door handles in place of the 9X’s pop-out items. A LiDAR unit above the windscreen is standard.
Pricing has not been announced. Volkswagen has positioned the 8X to undercut the 9X, which starts at 309,800 yuan (about $45,850). Final numbers should arrive with the full reveal.
