SAIC-Volkswagen revealed the ID.Era 5S at Auto Shanghai 2026. It is the second vehicle in the ID.Era family, following the ID.Era 9X crossover that launched in China in March 2026. Both models are developed specifically for China; neither will be offered in Europe, North America, or other markets.
Dimensions
The 5S is a large sedan: 4,836 mm long, 1,880 mm wide, 1,505 mm tall on a 2,766 mm wheelbase. Wheel sizes run from 17” to 19” by specification. At that length, the 5S competes directly with upper-D-segment saloons — a segment with deep roots in the Chinese executive car market.
Powertrain
The drivetrain is plug-in hybrid. A 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 109 hp pairs with a 177 hp electric motor. EV-only range on the Chinese CLTC cycle is 160 km. Battery capacity has not been disclosed. The configuration is front-wheel drive only; SAIC has not announced an all-wheel-drive option.
Where it differs from the ID.Era 9X
The two cars share a design language — smooth nose, horizontally stacked front lighting, full-width rear light bar — but differ in several details. The 5S uses semi-hidden door handles; the 9X has fully retractable units. Blue ambient lighting on the 5S exterior signals autonomous driving capability, but the 5S does not carry a LiDAR unit; the 9X does. The interior shifts from the 9X’s dual-screen setup to a single free-standing multimedia tablet on the 5S.
Timeline
Chinese market launch is planned before the end of 2026. Full specifications and pricing will be released closer to the on-sale date.
