GermanyVolkswagen Group’s supervisory board has approved Future Plan 2030, the largest restructuring in the company’s history. The plan cuts the group’s model range by up to 50% and the number of variants and equipment options by up to 75%, and reduces overcapacity in Europe.
What the plan sets out
The production system is to be sized for roughly 9 million cars a year. Group overcapacity currently runs to more than 500,000 units. The target is a 9% operating margin by 2030.
Four German sites are still without a settled future: Emden, Zwickau, Hannover and Neckarsulm. All four were named in earlier reporting on the restructuring, and the approved plan does not resolve them.
The job numbers, and what is actually agreed
Reuters reported a further 50,000 job cuts. Volkswagen’s own account is narrower: around 50,000 departures are already agreed across Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and CARIAD by 2030, and any additional global reductions are not a fixed target at this stage. The distinction matters, because the agreed figure and the reported one are being read as one number.
SEAT and CUPRA
Reports that SEAT would stop building cars in 2029 have not been confirmed by the brand. SEAT S.A. says no final decision has been made. A gradual wind-down after 2030 is possible, while CUPRA continues to be developed as the growth brand of the pair.
