Magna Steyr’s plant in Graz, Austria, is the world’s largest contract manufacturer of complete vehicles, building cars for other companies’ brands rather than its own. The company traces back to Steyr-Daimler-Puch, and its Graz site has been the sole production location for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class since 1979, when a purpose-built assembly hall opened for the model. Mercedes-Benz extended that contract through 2034.
BMW and Toyota shared a line at Graz for the Z4 roadster and its Toyota Supra twin, co-developed by the two companies and built there from late 2018. Production of both models ended in 2026, closing out the joint programme.
Since 2025, Magna Steyr has taken on a wave of Chinese EV brands seeking European-built cars to avoid the European Union’s tariffs on vehicles imported from China. GAC’s Aion V entered production in November 2025, followed five months later by the smaller Aion UT. Xpeng added the G6 and G9 SUVs to the line in September 2025, then the P7+ liftback in early 2026, with European deliveries starting in April. In June 2026, Xpeng announced a fourth model for the Graz line without naming it.
