Hatchback Cars

Two-box cars whose tailgate lifts the rear window with it, from sub-4-metre city cars to the Golf class.

Two boxes rather than three. Cabin and load bay share one volume, the tailgate takes the rear window up with it, and folding the back seats leaves a floor that runs to the front seatbacks. Everything the body style is known for follows from that one arrangement, the compromise included: with no parcel shelf sealing off the boot, more road noise reaches the cabin.

The word covers a wide span of car. The BYD Seagull is 3,780 mm long, the Volkswagen Golf 4,284 mm, and both are hatchbacks by the same test. It gets blurry at the edges. Against a wagon the difference is how far the roof runs before it stops; against a liftback it is proportion, since a liftback keeps a sedan’s long tail and borrows only the opening. Europe made this the default small-car shape and it remains so there, while North America has largely traded it for crossovers of similar footprint.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hatchback and a wagon?
Roof length. Both open the same way, with a tailgate that includes the rear glass, but a hatchback's roof ends over the rear axle and a wagon's carries on flat to the tail. That gives the wagon a longer load floor on what is usually a sedan-length body.
How many doors does a hatchback have?
Three or five, and the count includes the tailgate. A three-door hatchback has two passenger doors, a five-door has four. This is why a hatchback and a sedan of the same size are described with different door counts despite carrying the same number of people.
Does a hatchback hold more luggage than a sedan?
More volume, less often more length. The advantage is height and access: the opening reaches the roof, so tall objects go in that a boot aperture would refuse, and folding the rear seats produces a continuous floor. A sedan of the same class often has a deeper boot with no way to use the space above it.
