News about JAC

About

JAC Motors, formally Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group, was founded in Hefei in 1964 and built its business on commercial vehicles rather than passenger cars. Light and medium trucks, vans and the Refine range of MPVs still account for much of its domestic volume, and the company listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2001.

Its passenger-car and export business grew later. JAC’s T-series pickups and its SUVs sell across Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, in several markets through local assembly, and the Yiwei sub-brand covers small electric cars at the cheap end of the Chinese market. The Sehol brand, created out of the earlier partnership with Volkswagen, is being wound down.

What makes JAC unusual is how much of its output carries someone else’s badge. Volkswagen took 75 percent of the former JAC Volkswagen venture in May 2020 and renamed it Volkswagen Anhui, leaving JAC with a quarter; Volkswagen Group separately bought half of JAC’s parent holding company the same year. JAC also builds the Maextro S800 and V800 under Huawei’s HIMA alliance, where Huawei supplies the electronics and driver-assistance stack and JAC handles engineering and manufacturing. Until December 2023 it was also the contract manufacturer for NIO’s first generation of cars.
