Overview

The e.MAS 5 is a five-seat electric hatchback, built on a Geely-developed platform and assembled in Malaysia at Proton’s Tanjung Malim plant. It comes in two trims: the Prime runs a 30.12 kWh CATL LFP battery for 78 hp and 225 km of WLTP range, priced from RM59,800 (about $14,600). The Premium steps up to a 40.16 kWh pack, 114 hp and 325 km, from RM72,800 (about $17,800).

Both trims are front-wheel drive with a single-ratio automatic and charge 10-80% in roughly 4.3 hours on AC, or 30-80% in about 21 minutes on a DC fast charger. Neither figure competes on the spec sheet with pricier EVs - the e.MAS 5 is built to a cost target, not a range record.

It is Proton’s volume electric model: more than 13,000 units registered in Malaysia over the first seven months of 2026, ahead of every other electric car sold in the country, including Proton’s own e.MAS 7 SUV.

Proton's e.MAS became the fastest brand to 30,000 electric cars in Malaysia

Proton's e.MAS sub-brand passed 31,504 electrified registrations as of 31 July, the fastest any brand has reached that mark in Malaysian history - 20 months after the e.MAS 7's December 2024 launch. e.MAS now holds 42.6% of Malaysia's EV market, led by the e.MAS 5 hatchback.
