The Volkswagen Golf Mk8.5 is the facelifted version of the eighth-generation Golf, a compact hatchback built on the MQB Evo platform and sold in Europe’s C-segment against rivals such as the Peugeot 308 and Toyota Corolla. It measures 4,284 mm long and 1,789 mm wide, with the facelift adding slimmer LED headlights, a redesigned front bumper, and a full-width LED light bar.
Since September 2026 Germany also lists a Golf Hybrid: a 1.5-litre TSI with two electric motors and a 1.6 kWh battery that charges itself, in 136 PS and 170 PS versions. The mainstream range uses a 1.5-litre eTSI engine with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, offered in 116PS and 150PS states of tune through a 7-speed DSG automatic or, in the UK, a 6-speed manual. A plug-in hybrid GTE pairs a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine with a 19.7 kWh (net) battery and an electric motor for a combined 272 PS system output; its WLTP electric range is 131 km, or 82 miles in VW UK’s launch figures. At the performance end, the GTI runs a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine at 265PS, with a 300PS Clubsport tune above it, while the GTI Edition 50 reaches 325 PS, and the all-wheel-drive Golf R tops the range at 333PS and a 4.6-second 0-100 km/h time.
Inside, the Mk8.5 update restored physical shortcut buttons to the climate controls after criticism of the touch-only interface on the pre-facelift car, alongside an illuminated front VW badge and updated infotainment software. Trim levels span Life, Match, Style, R-Line, and Black Edition on the mainstream range, with GTE, GTI, GTI Clubsport, and R covering the electrified and performance variants.
In Germany the cheapest eTSI, the Life with 116 PS, lists at 34,560 euros; the Golf Hybrid starts at 37,505 euros, the eHybrid at 44,670 euros and the GTE at 48,955 euros (AutoBild’s German price list, 17 October 2026). The Golf remains one of Volkswagen’s highest-volume nameplates in Europe, built at the company’s Wolfsburg plant in Germany. In December 2024 Volkswagen announced plans to move Golf production to Puebla in Mexico from 2027.
