The Volvo XC40 is a compact SUV built on Volvo’s CMA platform, the same architecture underpinning the Volvo C40, EX40 and the Polestar 2. Since the 2024 model year, Volvo has split the nameplate in two: the battery-electric version now sells as the EX40, leaving the XC40 name for the mild-hybrid petrol lineup exclusively.
UK buyers choose between two 48V mild-hybrid turbo petrol engines, both driving the front wheels only. The B3 produces 163 hp and 265 Nm of torque, reaching 62 mph in 8.6 seconds. The B4 raises that to 197 hp and 300 Nm, cutting the sprint to 7.6 seconds for a little over £1,000 more. Volvo quotes combined economy of 42.8 mpg for both engines. The mild-hybrid system recovers braking energy to assist the petrol engine rather than to power the car on its own.
Inside, the XC40 carries Volvo’s portrait-oriented touchscreen running Google built-in, with Google Maps, Assistant and the Play Store integrated natively. A panoramic sunroof and Volvo’s usual safety suite, including the brand’s collision-avoidance systems, are available depending on trim. Boot space is 452 litres.
The XC40 is offered across Core, Plus, Plus Pro and Ultra trims, plus a Black Edition appearance package layered onto Plus Pro. UK pricing starts at £35,840 for a Core with the B3 engine and rises to £43,910 for an Ultra with the B4, with the Black Edition starting at £39,910. The XC40 measures 4,440 mm long, 1,863 mm wide and 1,652 mm tall.
