The Volvo XC60 is a midsize SUV and Volvo's best-selling model, sold with a 2.0-litre petrol engine in three states of electrification: a 48V mild hybrid badged B5, and the T6 and T8 plug-in hybrids, which share an 18.8 kWh battery and cover around 80 km on electricity alone. Overview

The Volvo XC60 is a midsize SUV and, for most of its life, Volvo’s best-selling model worldwide. The second generation arrived in 2017 on the SPA platform shared with the XC90 and the S90, and it was updated again for the 2026 model year. It measures 4,708 mm long on a 2,865 mm wheelbase, with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic across the whole range.

Every version uses the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, differing in how much electrification is bolted to it. The B5 is a 48V mild hybrid making 247 hp and 360 Nm, reaching 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds; its electrical system smooths the stop-start and recovers braking energy but cannot move the car on its own. Above it sit two plug-in hybrids, the T6 at 345 hp and the T8 at 449 hp, quoted by Volvo in metric as 350 PS and 455 PS. Both add an electric motor on the rear axle and an 18.8 kWh battery, and both are quicker than the badge suggests: 5.7 seconds for the T6, 4.9 for the T8.

Because the two plug-in hybrids share a battery, they share an electric range: about 82 km (51 miles) on the WLTP cycle for the T6, and a little under that for the heavier, harder-driven T8. That is enough to cover a typical commute without the engine starting, which is the case for buying one; there is no rapid charging, so the pack refills from a wallbox overnight.

UK prices open at 48,410 pounds for the B5, 55,360 pounds for the T6 and 68,860 pounds for the T8. European cars are built at Torslanda in Gothenburg, with additional production at Chengdu in China and US assembly announced for late 2026.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Volvo XC60 cost?
The Volvo XC60 starts from £48,410.
How powerful is the Volvo XC60?
The Volvo XC60 produces up to 247 hp.
What type of car is the Volvo XC60?
The Volvo XC60 is a Midsize SUV.
What is the difference between the Volvo XC60 T6 and T8?
Both are plug-in hybrids using the same 2.0-litre petrol engine, the same rear electric motor and the same 18.8 kWh battery. The T8 is tuned for more output, 449 hp against 345 hp, and reaches 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds against 5.7. Electric range is close to identical, at roughly 82 km for the T6 and 79 km for the T8, because the battery is the same.
How far does the Volvo XC60 plug-in hybrid go on electricity alone?
Volvo quotes about 51 miles (82 km) for the T6 and a couple of miles less for the T8, on the WLTP cycle. The 18.8 kWh battery charges from a domestic socket or a wallbox; there is no rapid-charging option.
Is the Volvo XC60 B5 a hybrid?
It is a mild hybrid, which is not the same thing. A 48V starter-generator assists the 2.0-litre petrol engine and recovers energy under braking, which trims fuel use, but it cannot drive the car on electricity and there is nothing to plug in.
Where is the Volvo XC60 built?
At Volvo's Torslanda plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, for European markets, and at Chengdu in China for others. Volvo has said US assembly follows from late 2026.
Does the Volvo XC60 come with all-wheel drive as standard?
Yes. Every version, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid alike, drives all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic. On the plug-in hybrids the rear axle is driven by the electric motor rather than by a propshaft.
