Audi A2 e-tron: 649 km and €38,200 to start

Audi has posted the first hard numbers for its entry-level electric compact: four power levels from 125 kW to 240 kW, up to 649 km WLTP and a German list price from €38,200 (about $41,600). Production starts in Ingolstadt this autumn. See the Audi A2 e-tron model page.

€38,200 (about $41,600) is where Audi’s price list for the A2 e-tron opens, and the car it buys shares its electric architecture with the Volkswagen ID. Polo, which starts at €24,995 (about $27,200). Audi has now posted four power levels, a battery specification and a range figure on its own site, ahead of a world premiere set for autumn 2026 and production starting at Ingolstadt in the same season.

Four power levels, one published battery

Audi lists 125, 140, 170 and 240 kW, all front-wheel drive, and says every version is available to order from the premiere rather than arriving in stages. In more familiar units that is 170 to 326 PS, or 168 to 322 hp. One battery has been detailed: a liquid-cooled lithium iron phosphate pack of 61 kWh gross and 58 kWh net, built cell-to-pack, fitted to the 140 kW car with the efficiency package.

The quoted range does not fit that battery. Audi puts the maximum at 649 km WLTP, and its own consumption figure for the efficiency car is 12.8 kWh per 100 km. At that rate 58 kWh usable is worth about 450 km, so the 649 km version runs a pack in the low 80s that Audi has not yet described. Capacities for the other three power levels are unannounced, as are the per-version ranges, the charging speeds and the car’s dimensions.

The efficiency claim

Audi calls the A2 e-tron the most efficient car it has built, on that preliminary 12.8 kWh/100 km. Drag coefficient is 0.24. The aerodynamics account for about 0.9 kWh/100 km of the total and include air curtains, panel gap covers and a cooling intake that stays closed unless the car needs it. Charging efficiency at a wallbox is given as 89.6%, the share of energy drawn from the wall that reaches the battery rather than being lost as heat. The car also does vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-home, so it can power tools or feed a house circuit.

The name and the price gap

The original A2 was built from 1999 to 2005, an aluminium space-frame hatchback 3,826 mm long that sold slowly and cost too much to make. The new car reuses the badge and none of the engineering. It sits on the MEB toolkit that also carries the ID. Polo and the Cupra Raval, though Audi has not confirmed which version of the platform, and the €13,205 (about $14,400) between it and the ID. Polo buys a bigger battery, more power at the top and the efficiency package the range figure depends on.

Production runs at Audi’s main plant in Ingolstadt, which employs around 40,000 people and also builds the A3, the Q6 e-tron and the A6 e-tron. Audi has not named a premiere venue; the Paris show opens in October.
