Toyota Hilux FCEV: hydrogen pickup due in 2028

Toyota has teased the production Hilux FCEV, a hydrogen fuel-cell version of the ninth-generation pickup due in Europe and Oceania in 2028. Early targets are more than 400 km of WLTP range and a 2,500 kg towing capacity.

Toyota has shown the first teaser of the production Hilux FCEV, a hydrogen fuel-cell version of the ninth-generation Hilux pickup. It goes on sale in Europe and Oceania in 2028 and joins the Diesel 48V mild hybrid and the battery-electric Hilux already in the range.

Toyota has published only early targets so far: a range of more than 400 km on the WLTP cycle and a braked towing capacity of 2,500 kg. The rest of the powertrain specification will follow closer to launch. For comparison, the electric Hilux is rated at 257 km WLTP and tows up to 1,600 kg.

Hydrogen Hilux prototypes

Toyota’s earlier hydrogen Hilux was based on the previous generation. Ten prototypes were built in the UK, using fuel-cell components from the Mirai, three tanks holding 7.8 kg of hydrogen and a 182 PS rear electric motor, with a range of up to 600 km. Toyota has not said which of these figures carry over to the production truck.

A separate fuel-cell Hilux prototype will also run the 2027 Dakar Rally in the experimental Future Mission 1000 category.
