Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 22,524 ID.4 SUVs in the United States, covering model years 2023 to 2026. NHTSA lists it as campaign 26V630 and describes the fault in one line: the high-voltage battery may fail and lead to a vehicle fire. Volkswagen’s own recall number is 93EX.
What owners are told to do
Until a repair exists, owners are advised to charge to a maximum of 80% battery capacity. Charging above 80% in certain affected vehicles could trigger “thermal propagation”, a fire within the battery, Electrek reports from Volkswagen’s filing.
Only certain vehicles in the 2023-2026 range are affected. NHTSA lists the remedy as under development. Interim letters to owners are expected to be mailed on 27 November 2026, with more to follow once a repair is ready. Owners can check their VIN on NHTSA.gov, where the affected VINs became searchable on 6 October 2026, or call Volkswagen customer service on 1-800-893-5298. The filing covers US vehicles only.
What the filing says about the cause
The root cause is still unknown. Volkswagen told NHTSA it had received 22 claims between 18 January 2024 and 7 August 2026. Its Group Product Safety Committee has asked the battery cell supplier, SK Battery America, for “additional clarifications” about production and a potential clean date. The company said the recall follows another field study in an ongoing review of Volkswagen vehicles not included in previous battery recall campaigns.
Volkswagen has previously recalled nearly 100,000 electric vehicles worldwide over potential battery issues, including nearly 44,000 ID.4s in the US, Electrek reports.
