Volkswagen ID.4 platform and positioning
The ID.4 is Volkswagen’s electric midsize SUV and the highest-volume car the brand builds on the MEB platform. It measures 4,584 mm long on a 2,771 mm wheelbase, with 543 litres of boot space behind the rear seats and 1,575 litres with them folded, which puts it in the same footprint bracket as the combustion Tiguan. It has been on sale since 2021 and reached its current specification through a 2024 model year cabin and software rework and a March 2026 update that enlarged the main battery.
Volkswagen ID.4 range and charging
The German range now opens with the Pure, a 58 kWh lithium iron phosphate pack driving a 140 kW (188 hp) rear motor for 436 km WLTP. The volume car is the Pro: 79 kWh usable, 210 kW (282 hp), 545 Nm and 570 km WLTP, or up to 574 km on the most efficient wheel and tyre combination, charging at up to 165 kW for a 10 to 80% top-up in about 29 minutes. Pro 4MOTION adds an 80 kW front motor for 295 hp and 6.1 seconds to 100 km/h. The GTX is the performance version at 250 kW (335 hp) and 679 Nm, 5.4 seconds to 100 km/h, 538 km WLTP and 185 kW DC charging.
Inside the Volkswagen ID.4
Inside, the ID.4 uses Volkswagen’s ID. cockpit layout: a small driver display on the steering column, a central touchscreen, and a drive selector mounted on the instrument binnacle rather than the console. The 2023 rework replaced the original 10-inch screen with a 12.9-inch unit, backlit the temperature and volume sliders that had drawn complaints in the launch cars, and moved the steering wheel back to physical buttons. Volkswagen ID.4 price and trims
List prices in Germany run from €40,580 for the Pure to €56,160 for the GTX, and Volkswagen has been running a purchase bonus of up to €5,000 that puts transaction prices below those figures. A redesigned replacement is due in October 2026. In the meantime the ID.4 remains the model Volkswagen sells most of in Europe’s most electrified market: it topped Norway’s August 2026 registrations with 710 cars, ahead of the ID.7 saloon in tenth.
