“In China, for China” was the phrase Volkswagen used to explain why its Chinese operations were designing cars nobody outside China would see. That is now under review in the other direction.
Handelsblatt reported in July that Volkswagen has begun an internal feasibility study into bringing China-developed models to Europe, with Zwickau named as one possible production site. The point is not to import finished cars: several European plants are running below capacity, and the study covers building the Chinese designs on them.
The candidates
Six models have been reported as under consideration. The ID. ERA 9X, the extended-range SUV developed with SAIC, is the lead candidate. Behind it are the ID. ERA 5X, the ID. ERA 5S plug-in hybrid sedan, the ID. UNYX 08 and ID. UNYX 09, and an unrevealed SUV on the CSP platform reported for around the end of 2027.
Volkswagen has confirmed none of them. The study is an economic assessment, and no decision has been announced.
Why the Chinese operation is the one being asked
The argument is speed and cost, and Volkswagen has published figures for both. Its China Electronic Architecture, developed in China with Xpeng and Cariad, shortens overall vehicle development cycles by up to 30 percent and cuts development costs by up to 50 percent “in selected key projects,” in the group’s own wording. The first production car on it is the ID. UNYX 07, built at Volkswagen Anhui and launched in China in May 2026 from ¥129,900 ($19,200).
A European version of any of these cars would need different homologation, different safety equipment and a different supply chain, and Volkswagen has said nothing about what that would cost.
SAIC-Volkswagen's first range-extender model and its largest SUV globally. The 9X is a six-seat EREV crossover: a 1.5-litre turbo engine works only as a generator alongside dual electric motors for up to 510 hp, with 51.1 or 65.2 kWh batteries giving 347 to 406 km of electric-only CLTC range and a mixed range past 1,600 km. China-only, priced from 309,800 yuan.
SAIC-Volkswagen's second ID.Era model for China. PHEV sedan, 1.5L atmo + electric motor, 160 km EV range CLTC. 4,836 mm, 2,766 mm wheelbase. China-only, launch by end 2026. Pricing not announced.
Volkswagen's first mass-produced model co-developed with XPeng, built on XPeng's 800V platform for the Chinese market. The ID.Unyx 08 is a full-size electric SUV offered as a single-motor RWD with up to 730 km of CLTC range, or a dual-motor AWD with 496 hp and a 4.9-second 0-100 km/h time. China-only, priced from 229,900 yuan.
The ID. UNYX 07 is the first Volkswagen built on the China Electronic Architecture, the zonal electrical system developed in China with Xpeng. It is a China-only electric sedan with a single 228 hp rear motor, a 59.9 kWh Gotion LFP battery and 558 km of CLTC range, built at Volkswagen Anhui and priced from ¥129,900.
