SEAT S.A. opened its Martorell plant in 1993, replacing the company’s older Zona Franca factory in Barcelona, and the site has served as SEAT’s headquarters ever since. SEAT itself has been part of Germany’s Volkswagen Group since 1986, when Volkswagen AG bought a controlling stake in what was then a state-owned Spanish automaker. Martorell now covers 2.8 million square metres and employs more than 13,000 people, and its lines have built over 12 million cars across 45 different models since opening.

The plant builds both of SEAT’s brands. The SEAT Ibiza and Arona moved onto Martorell’s Line 3 in 2024, and their current facelifted versions entered production there in 2025 ahead of deliveries starting in January 2026. Cupra’s Formentor and Leon have been built at Martorell since June 2024, part of a wider 3 billion euro investment SEAT is putting into the site.

From June 2026, Martorell added the Cupra Raval and Volkswagen ID. Polo, the first two cars of Volkswagen Group’s Electric Urban Car Family, a shared-platform project spanning four electric models across three brands and led by SEAT and Cupra on behalf of the group’s Brand Group Core division. Volkswagen Group says the shared platform saves around 600 million euros compared with developing each model on its own, part of a wider 10 billion euro push to electrify the group’s Spanish production under the “Future: Fast Forward” project.
