South Korea registered 138,895 new light vehicles in July 2026, up 0.6% year on year. The best-selling single model among them was not a Hyundai or a Kia. It was the Tesla Model Y, on 8,705 registrations, 173 ahead of the Hyundai Grandeur.
That is the second time in three months the Model Y has finished first overall, after 8,762 units in May. In a market where domestic brands take roughly nine of every ten cars sold, an imported model leading the monthly chart is still unusual enough to be news.

Kia filled most of the rest of the table. The Seltos reached a record second place on 7,427 units, followed by the Carnival on 6,917, the Sorento on 6,153, the Sportage on 5,381 and the Ray on 5,178. Kia’s domestic sales rose 21.3% year on year in July, and the Sorento still leads the market for the year to date. Hyundai’s Porter light truck closed out the top eight on 4,280.
The reason an imported car is at the top of that list is a price, and the price is set by a subsidy rule. South Korea pays its full central EV subsidy only on cars listed below 53 million won. The Shanghai-built Model Y Premium rear-drive version lists at 49.99 million won, about 3 million won under the ceiling, and Seoul’s local top-up brings the delivered figure to roughly 47 million.
Tesla has protected that position deliberately. On 1 July, the day second-half subsidy funding opened, it raised prices across most of the Model 3 and Model Y range in Korea but left the Premium rear-drive version untouched. In July that single version accounted for 6,612 of the 8,705 Model Ys registered, or 76% of the model’s volume. The Premium Long Range took most of the remaining 2,092.

The monthly result sits on top of a much larger run. Tesla registered 66,376 cars in South Korea in the first seven months of 2026, up 149.8% year on year, of which 52,064 were Model Ys. Full-year 2025 was 59,916 cars and 2024 was 29,750, so this year passed both totals before August. In July, Tesla took 33.1% of the imported car market, ahead of BMW on 6,533 units and Mercedes-Benz on 3,959.

The subsidy ceiling falls to 50 million won for 2027. At 49.99 million, the Model Y Premium stays eligible by 10,000 won, which is either careful pricing or a coincidence that Tesla will not be in a hurry to correct. Whether the rest of the range can follow it under that line is the question the next set of subsidy tables will answer.

The second-generation Kia Seltos launched in Korea in January 2026, with a 1.6-litre turbo petrol up to 193 hp and a 141 hp hybrid version due to join the lineup during 2026. Prices start from around ₩24.77 million in Korea.
The Kia Carnival Hybrid is the hybrid version of Kia's three-row MPV for the US market, pairing a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor for 242 hp combined and an EPA-rated 32 mpg. It seats seven or eight and starts at $41,390.
The facelifted fourth-generation Kia Sorento is a three-row midsize SUV offered with naturally aspirated, turbo, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains up to 281 hp, priced from around $33,635 in the US.
The facelifted fifth-generation Kia Sportage (2026 MY) spans naturally aspirated, turbo, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains from 149 to 265 hp, sold in short- and long-wheelbase forms depending on market.
