The Geely Starray EM-i is the plug-in hybrid version of Geely’s Starray compact SUV, built on the automaker’s GEA architecture - the same underpinnings used by the export-market Geely EX5. GEA is designed to support battery-electric, hybrid and EREV powertrains and multiple drivetrain layouts on one platform.
The EM-i system pairs a 1.5-litre engine with an electric motor for a combined 262 hp. Geely offers two battery sizes: an 18.4 kWh pack for the standard range and a larger 29.8 kWh pack, with the combined petrol-plus-electric range reaching up to 1,055 km on a full tank and a full charge.
The platform has drawn attention beyond China because Ford has named it as a possible basis for a next-generation Ford Kuga, following a joint venture Ford and Geely are setting up at Ford’s Valencia, Spain plant. Any Kuga built on GEA would carry Ford’s own design and is not expected before around 2029.
